In today’s digital age, a Permanent Account Number (PAN) is no longer just for adults. Whether you are planning to open a savings account for your child, invest in mutual funds in their name, or name them as a nominee, a Minor PAN Card is a mandatory document.
If you are wondering how to navigate the application process, this guide covers everything from eligibility to the final delivery of the card.
Can a Minor Apply for a PAN Card?
Yes. According to the Income Tax Department, there is no age limit for obtaining a PAN card. However, since a minor (anyone under the age of 18) cannot legally enter into a contract, the application must be filed by their parents or a legal guardian.
Step-by-Step Process to Apply Online (via NSDL/Protean)
Step 1:- Visit the Official Portal Online PAN Application portal (Protean/NSDL).
Step 2:- Select Application Type
- Application Type: Choose “New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)”.
- Category: Select “Individual”.
Step 3:- Fill in Applicant Details Enter the minor’s title (Kumari/Mast.), last name, first name, and date of birth. Use the parent’s email ID and mobile number for communication.
Step 4:- This is the most important part of a minor’s application. Since the applicant is a minor, you must fill out the details of the Representative Assessee (Parent or Guardian). This information is usually found in Section 14 of the form.
Step 5:- The fee for a physical PAN card delivered within India is approximately ₹107 (including GST). You can pay via Credit Card, Debit Card, Net Banking, or UPI.
Step 6:- After payment, you will receive an acknowledgement form. If you are not using the Aadhaar-based e-KYC (which is common for minors to ensure the parent’s signature is captured), you must print the form, attach photos, sign it (parent’s signature), and courier it to the NSDL office in Pune.
How Long Does it Take?
Once the documents are verified, the PAN number is usually generated within 5 to 7 working days. The physical card is delivered to the registered address within 15 days.
