PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: The Centre’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is gaining popularity fast. According to government figures, more than 50 lakh homes have now joined the scheme and are using solar power.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme in February 2024. The government’s goal is to put solar panels on the rooftops of 1 crore homes by 2027. The scheme has mainly helped families who were struggling with heavy electricity bills.
300 Units of Free Electricity
Once a solar panel is fitted on the roof, families can run lights, fans, AC, cooler, fridge and other appliances without worrying about a big bill. The scheme gives 300 units of electricity free. The government also gives a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 on the cost of installing the panel.
Solar panels fitted under the scheme usually last about 25 years. This means a family can enjoy a “zero electricity bill” for more than two decades.
Extra Benefit for Bihar Residents
People in Bihar get an added advantage. Along with the Centre’s subsidy of ₹78,000, the Bihar government gives an extra subsidy of ₹20,000. Together, this means savings of up to ₹98,000 for a household in the state. The state subsidy is separate from the one given by the Modi government.
Subsidy Details
| Solar Panel Capacity | Central Subsidy | Bihar Government Subsidy | Total Subsidy |
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | ₹10,000 | ₹40,000 |
