In India, your Voter ID card (also known as the Electors Photo Identity Card or EPIC) is more than just a document to cast your vote; it serves as a vital identity and address proof. However, a small spelling mistake in your name or an incorrect date of birth can cause significant hurdles.
The good news? You no longer need to visit government offices or wait in long queues. The Election Commission of India (ECI) allows you to update your details from the comfort of your home.
Step-by-Step Guide to Correct Voter ID Online (Form 8)
Step 1:- Go to the official website voters.eci.gov.in. If you are a new user, click on “Sign Up” to create an account using your mobile number. If you already have an account, simply “Login.”
Step 2:- Once logged in, look for the section titled “Shifting of residence/correction of entries in existing electoral roll” and select Form 8.
Step 3:- You will be asked if the correction is for “Self” or “Other Elector.” Choose “Self” if your EPIC number is already linked to your profile.
Step 4:- From the list of options, select “Correction of Entries in Existing Electoral Roll.” This allows you to edit your name, gender, DOB, relation type, address, mobile number, or photo.
Step 5:- Fill in the Correct Details
- Enter the correct information in the fields provided.
- Tick the boxes next to the specific fields you want to change (e.g., if you only want to change your name, tick the ‘Name’ box).
- Upload the supporting documents as proof for the changes requested.
Step 6:- Enter your “Place” of application, solve the Captcha code, and click on “Preview.” Carefully review all details. If everything looks correct, click “Submit.”
How to Track Your Application Status
- Go back to the Voters’ Service Portal.
- Click on “Track Application Status.”
- Enter your Reference ID and select your State.
- The system will show whether your application is “Submitted,” “Appointed by BLO,” “Field Verified,” or “Accepted/Rejected.”
